John Mazziotta

Director Of The UCLA Brain Mapping Center

He Gave The World A Blueprint Of The Human Brain.

As a college student, his dream was to become an architect. But once John Mazziotta got a taste of neuroscience, his goal shifted from buildings to brains. Nearly four decades later, at least one aspect of Mazziotta’s architecture dream survived fully intact: the importance of blueprints. As director of UCLA’s groundbreaking Ahmanson Lovelace Brain Mapping Center, which brings cutting-edge science to describing the human brain, Mazziotta has led the charge to create, in effect, an architectural plan of the human brain. The results are helping neuroscientists better understand and treat brain injuries, neurological diseases, and psychological and psychiatric disorders–and improving diagnosis and care for millions around the world.
