HIS GIFT TO THE CITY IS A BETTER WORLD.
Meyer Luskin took a bus across town from working-class Boyle Heights to UCLA to get his degree. And the journey was as much spiritual as it was educational. For Luskin, giving back is not an option; it is a sacred obligation, for individuals as well as universities. The CEO of Scope Industries, a model of sustainable business, has made it his mission to unite the intellectual capital of UCLA with civic leaders to address the most pressing issues confronting our community, nation and the world. In 2008, this disarmingly humble business leader and his wife Renee, also a UCLA graduate, established the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation, which develops ongoing programs for improving urban life like smart water systems, parklets, electric vehicle plans and solar power options, among many others. In January 2011, the couple donated $100 million to the campus: The Luskin School of Public Affairs and the Luskin Conference Center stand as testament to their generosity and vision.
