Soprano Angel Blue has performed in the great concert halls of Europe: La Scala in Milan, the Royal Albert Hall and the Theatre an der Wien. She makes her Met debut in the 2017 production of La Bohème. But in some ways, a 2006 production in UCLA’s Schoenberg Music Building is the most memorable performance of her life. A graduate student singing the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, she knew the most intent member of the audience was her father. “He was so proud,” she recalls. A Gospel singer himself, Sylvester Blue was her first voice coach. He introduced her to opera when she was only five years old, giving her an album of Leontyne Price that she played over and over. When her father died on Dec. 31, 2006, Angel Blue questioned everything about her musical career. But three months later, she successfully auditioned for Plácido Domingo’s Young Artist Program. She couldn’t share the news with her father. But perhaps she didn’t need to. Her voice, Domingo told her, reminded him of a great soprano he’d worked with: Leontyne Price.
